UXBRIDGE CRICKET CLUB SAT 1st XI v Barnes on Sat 19 May 2007 at 1.30
UXBRIDGE CRICKET CLUB Lost by 25 runs
Uxbridge fell short by 25 runs on Saturday chasing a competitive 154 set by Barnes. It was day when the ball seamed and swung all day and the seam bowlers from both teams being successful. The difference between the two teams was James Drake-Brockman who hit 61 patient runs and finished the game with 2 wickets for 4 runs from 7 balls.
Barnes had won the toss and surprised the Uxbridge team when they elected to bat. Uxbridge made a good start with the ball restricting Barnes to 6 runs off 7 overs when the first wicket fell. Brian Winson bowled in tandem with Elsroy Powell in a tight opening spell and set Uxbridge a good patform the bowl Barnes out cheaply. However James Drake-Brockman played a spirtted innings and building key partnerships with the tail. Brian Winson had cleaned up the top order taking the top three batsmens wickets. Kish Shallow bowled superbly and dismissed the middle order with some intelligent bowling and Elsroy Powell made smart work of the Barnes tail taking four wickets in his return spell.
Uxbrdige made a terrible start loosing Keith Wallar for a duck in the second over and wickets continued to fall. Bal Mangat played no shot at a inswinging delivery and Tony Stephens played an attacking cover drive only to see he had played on to his wickets. At 57-8 Barnes were all but home and looking towards a crucial 10 point win. Barnes bowled good lines and the Uxbridge batsmen failed to show the application that was needed on a slow and low seaming wicket.
It was when Andy Stephens and Elsroy Powell met in the middle things started to change. Batting patiently and picking up singles when they could a possible victory looked in sight. The pair had put on 66, with Andy hitting a six and 4 in the 40th over. Elsroy had batted calmly and showed his class steering Uxbridge to the brink of victory. However James Drake-Brockman had the final say in the matter clean bowling Andy Stephens and Graeme Lines.
Uxbridge take some heart from the game with a fine bowling and fielding display and know they can bat better that they did on Saturday. They are away to Shepherds Bush next week and keen to bounce straight back.
