Uxbridge 366 / 8 beat Winchmore Hill 235 all out – 4 points
Uxbridge’s Sunday First XI continued their push for the Chess Valley League Division 4 title as Premier League side Winchmore Hill suffered a 131 run defeat at Park Road.
Uxbridge’s final home fixture of the Chess Valley campaign saw them amass 366 for eight in their 45 over allocation, which the visitors valiantly attempted to chase but Uxbridge’s attritional tactics saw them bowled out in 42.1 overs.
Having lost the toss Uxbridge were not too despondent when asked to bat first on a wicket that looked as if it would deteriorate throughout the day, and duly took full advantage of their guest’s generosity. Former Uxbridge bowler Jamie Thorpe led the attack and made the initial breakthrough by bowling Keith Waller for 18, but only after the Uxbridge opener had punched the paceman down the ground for a number of well-timed boundaries.
Danish Raza (30) continued the theme of striking boundaries in his opening partner’s absence, but with last week’s centurion Elsroy Powell (7) falling cheaply Uxbridge were relying on the fielding extras to keep the score moving along. That was until Zabi Maqsoodi entered the fray. His first delivery faced was short and wide outside off stump and calmly guided down to the third man boundary, his second became a sighter and the third saw him skip down the wicket to launch seamer C. Chapman back over his head for four. From then on carnage ensued as the ball was despatched by special delivery to all corners of the ground. Having survived a close run out shout Maqsoodi raced to 50 off just 20 balls and ended up caught by Thorpe at square leg for a total of 101 in only 47 deliveries.
Just as crucially Sunny Sandhu (49) and Waheed Safi (85 not out) played elegant innings’ to keep the pressure on Winchmore Hill from both ends and help build the towering total. The visitors had to continue at 8.16 runs per over for victory but with Gareth Stoneman (one for 47) opening up with two consecutive maidens and Powell (one for 29) snaring a victim in his second over the odds were stacked high against the Hill. Even in the face of such adversity the seam attack was proving expensive and so the experience of Andy Stephens was introduced after just six overs to take the pace off the ball and slow down the scoring rate. Stephens’ tight bowling in essence ended the game as a contest as the field became spread and the boundaries cut out, making it a case of seeing how many wickets Uxbridge could collect.
Three of these came from young seamer Tom Drinkwater, who bowled tight lines and lengths outside the off stump to frustrate the batsmen. A further three were claimed by Mohit Mehta whilst the best was certainly saved until last. Despite being hit for 18 in two overs, Sandhu produced an off spinners dream delivery to finish the innings. Flighting the ball outside the off stump, the batsmen felt it safe to leave the ball alone only to see it turn sharply with bounce to remove the off-bail and bring the match to a close. Uxbridge now have two fixtures remaining to clinch the championship having lost out on the Division 5 title in the final game of the previous season.
