North Enfield (CVL) v UXBRIDGE CRICKET CLUB SUN 1st XI on Sun 09 Sep 2007 at 12.30
UXBRIDGE CRICKET CLUB Won by 289 Runs - 4 Points
NORTH ENFIELD 124/7 (0 Pts) lost to UXBRIDGE 413/6 (4 Pts)
Uxbridge were crowned the Chess Valley League Division Four champions after amassing 413 runs in just 45 overs at North Enfield, a Club record for a limited overs game.
Despite suffering a relegation hangover after dropping down to Division Two of the Middlesex County Cricket League the previous day, Sunday’s fixture enabled the players to vent their frustration and a 289 run victory was the ideal way to clinch the title.
The Park Road side had many obstacles to overcome in their quest for glory during the season, most notably only playing two of their eight fixtures at home, but despite a tiring campaign they showed much resolve to make up for losing out on the Division Five title on the final day of the previous season by winning all of the fixtures played this campaign.
Electing to bat first Uxbridge’s openers Andy Stephens (30) and Ryan Connor put on a 52 run opening stand to set the platform for the middle order to power through the opposition. Stephens’ dismissal brought West Indian Elsroy Powell to the crease for his final game for the Club and he did not disappoint. Taking exceptionally quick singles early in his innings, Powell got his eye in as well as helping to nudge Connor towards successive fifties for Uxbridge.
Connor eventually fell for 62 but by then Powell was striking the ball with consummate ease, and with Keith Waller in terrific form also at the crease the pair set about bludgeoning the opposition to all parts of the ground, and often beyond. A 196 run partnership flourished in the autumnal sunshine and Waller was unfortunate not to make his maiden ton for the Club; a local rule involving a tree in the realms of play restricted him to 91.
When Powell was caught at mid-on for a spectacular 166 from just 87 balls Uxbridge had amassed 364 for 3 in 41 overs and cameos from Waheed Safi (17 from six deliveries) and Mohit Mehta (25 not out from nine balls) meant Uxbridge flew past the 400 run barrier.
With the ball in hand Uxbridge were just as ruthless as they had been with the bat and Aimal Bangash’s seven overs earned him figures of four for just three runs. The remainder of the bowling attack were just as miserly as the game petered out on the field, but off it the celebrations began in earnest. With the Middlesex Federation Shield Final to be contested by many of those on display next Sunday at Park Road, the Club hope yet more scenes of success will be on view before the end of the season.
